Carr and Lukens family papers

Abstract

The Carr and Lukens families were prominent figures in Rock Island County in the 19th and 20th centuries, and they were among the first families to settle in the area. The Carr and Lukens family papers are arranged into seven series: Correspondence, 1837-1924 and undated; Writings and drawings, 1850-1918; Financial records, 1829-1946 (bulk 1837-1869); Genealogical data, 1905-1968 and undated; Printed material, 1805-1981; Photographs, circa 1860s-1970 and undated; and Realia.

John Ericsson papers

Abstract

John Ericsson was a Swedish-American inventor and mechanical engineer. He is perhaps best known for designing the Civil War ship U.S.S. Monitor, an ironclad warship with a revolutionary rotating turret. The John Ericsson papers consists of two letter-size folders of material and one oversize indenture. Included are letters, 1853-1879, written by Ericsson, primarily addressed to John O. Sargent.

Esping family papers

Abstract The Esping family emigrated to Illinois from their home in Döderhult, Sweden in 1853. The family line and genealogy is extensive, but this collection focuses mainly on Julius Esping, his wife Sophie Bezelius, and their direct line. Their sons, Julius and Axel, fought in the United States Civil War, and Axel was killed at the Battle of Vicksburg in 1863. John Henry Hauberg papers

Abstract John Henry Hauberg was a businessman, philanthropist, civic organizer, researcher, and photographer active in Rock Island and the Quad Cities area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Hauberg and his wife, Susanne Denkmann Hauberg, were very active in the Quad Cities community, serving on many advisory boards and organizing dozens of philanthropic initiatives. Ephraim L. and Louise Manning papers

Abstract

Ephraim and Louise Manning were interested in participating in the Quad Cities community and its history. They were members of groups such as the Black Hawk Hiking Club, Friendship Force of the Quad Cities, and Viewfinders Camera Club. Materials in the collection include newspaper clippings on local history and historic homes, world affairs, local news, and medical news; photos, slides, scrapbook pages, and cassette tapes.

Basil H. Messler diary

Abstract Basil H. Messler enlisted in the Union Army in 1864, at Fort McClellan in Davenport, Iowa. Messler served in the Mississippi Marine Brigade, which was commanded by Brigadier General Alfred W. Ellet. He saw action at Vicksburg several times. The Brigade was dissolved in August 1864, and Messler was reassigned as Commissary Sergeant of the First Battalion Calvary Regiment. He was later promoted to Corporal. Gould D. Molineaux diaries

Abstract

Gould D. Molineaux (1835?-1883) served as a corporal and sergeant in Company E of the 8th Illinois volunteer infantry. He fought the duration of the Civil War from early June 1861 to to the war's conclusion, including many important battles during the Vicksburg Campaign. This collection contains four diaries handwritten by Gould D. Molineaux during his volunteer service in the Civil War and a tintype of Molineaux posing in his Army uniform.

Abstract The Edward D. Sweeney account ledger, 1860-1869, primarily contains the business records of Edward Sweeney, a Rock Island lawyer, particularly related to bounty claims following the American Civil War. Most of these claims were initiated by widows, parents, or legal gardians of orphaned children seeking pensions for family members who died in combat, but many claims are related to back pay of discharged soldiers.
